Pre-Op Guidelines

2 Week Pre-Op Liver Prep Diet
Start 14 days Prior to Surgery

Starting 14 days before your surgery we require all patients to start a 1000-1200 calorie diet that contains adequate amounts of protein and that is low in calories and carbohydrates. The goal of this pre-op diet is to shrink the size of the liver. It is important to shrink the size of your liver prior to surgery due to the fact that the liver lays directly on top of the stomach and it can obstruct the surgeons view of the stomach if it is enlarged. Therefore, it is important that you adhere to this diet closely so that your surgeon has a good visual field during your surgery, which will help to ensure a safe operation.

The 7-day pre-op meal plan will help you easily stick with the diet and get you started on the right track. Feel free to use the diet as is, or modify it based on your own unique taste. As part of your pre-op diet the Nicholson Clinic is proud to provide you with the highest quality unflavored protein powder on the market. Based on our experience with thousands of patients we have found that the use of unflavored protein powder during the pre-op diet improves compliance and prevents boredom as patients don’t have to consume the same thick milky based protein shake three times a day for 2 long weeks.

General Diet Guidelines

Dinner: Have a healthy meal that contains no more than 500 calories and that is high in protein and fiber, low in carbohydrate, and that contains a small amount of healthy fat to help keep you full longer. See dinner recipe ideas. To stay within these guidelines, you would need to ensure that your dinner contains the following:

  1. 4-5 ounces’ lean protein (good examples include grilled or baked chicken breast or fish, 93% lean or leaner ground beef or ground turkey, sirloin steak with visible fat removed, and 2-3 eggs whites scrambled with 1 whole egg (for flavor).
  2. 2-3 cups of low starch vegetables, or salad (examples include: broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, turnip greens, cabbage, Brussel sprouts, green beans, mushrooms, celery, onions, peppers, asparagus, zucchini, and any salad greens). You will need to avoid any starchy vegetables such as: corn, peas, potatoes, squash, yams/sweet potatoes, and beans.
  3. 2 servings of healthy monounsaturated fat. Examples of 1 serving of healthy fat include: 1 TBSP Extra Virgin Olive Oil, ½ medium avocado, 1/3  cup guacamole, 1/8  cup any raw nuts (without added oil), 1 TBSP All Natural Peanut Butter or Almond Butter.
  4. Fruit: During this diet you are allowed to consume ½ serving of fruit daily such as: ½ cup of any berries, ½ small apple or pear, ½ cup grapes, and ½ cup watermelon. Please do not consume more fruit that this as it is too high in sugar and makes it difficult to shrink liver

Other:

  1. Condiments: You may liberally use any low calorie condiments such as mustard, low fat mayo or miracle whip, salsa, and lemon juice + balsamic vinaigrette (to be added to olive oil as part of salad dressing).
  2. Liquids: Please make sure and consume 64 ounces of water daily. Feel free to use flavored water such as Crystal Light, Mio drops. Zero Vitamin Water and PowerAde Zero Calorie. Do not consume any liquid sugar such as: juice, sweet tea, milk, high calorie coffee drinks, high calorie energy drinks, etc. during this time. Note: You may also want to consume 1 cup of broth or bouillon daily and 6-8 ounces of V8 Vegetable Juice daily to prevent depletion of sodium and potassium levels while on this diet.
